This novel centres on Santiago, a shepherd boy from Andalusia, Spain. He had a dream about finding a treasure in some place and he had a urge to pursue this. A fortune teller also encourages him and thereafter, he gave up all he had and set out on a journey he had little or no clue about.
He encountered a lot on his journey, found love and also met people who added to him as well as took away from him. He learnt new things about the world and even about himself.
After a long time, Santiago later met the Alchemist who offered to cross the desert with him. He arrived at the Egyptian pyramids and began to dig for treasure but he found nothing buried in the ground. As if that was not enough, he got robbed of what he had.
Returning to Andalusia, Santiago went back to the church where he dreamt of the treasure. He dug where he slept, beneath a tree, and there he found the treasure he had been looking for.
The Alchemist is a fable that encourages us to pursue what has been laid in our hearts. It is a story of hard work and hope. It teaches us about the importance of listening to our hearts, following our dreams, understanding that there could be obstacles on the way but everything we go through is for a purpose; and eventually with determination and faith, we can achieve all we set out heart on. Another thing we can pick from this story is that sometimes, what we are looking for is close to us or even right within us.
One of the popular quotes from the book is “When you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Trust me, this doesn’t do justice to this book. It’s one of those books you should have in your library.
